Free Hakeem al-Araibi – former Bahraini national footballer

Published: 8 February 2019

Former national footballer Hakeem al-Araibi found refuge and safety in Australia in 2014 after fleeing torture and persecution in his home country of Bahraini in the Middle East.

While living in Australia, Hakeem spoke out against his home country’s government and human rights violations, including the torture he suffered in detention after being arrested and detained for vandalising a police station (despite playing in a televised soccer match abroad at the time).

In December last year, Hakeem travelled to Thailand for a holiday with his wife, where he was arrested and now faces possible deportation back to Bahraini, where he will face certain danger.
