Union win for casual nurses, midwives and AINs/PCs

Published 12 July, 2017

Casual nurses, midwives and AINs/PCs will soon have the right to request permanent part-time or full-time employment if they’ve worked regular hours for the same employer for 12 months.
The Fair Work Commission (FWC) handed down its decision after many unions, including the QNMU, sought an award clause providing for the conversion of all casual staff to permanent positions.

The QNMU has already negotiated similar clauses in the past for individual enterprise agreements. So if you’re only covered by the Nurses Award and you’re a casual worker, this ruling will apply to you once the FWC approves the new provisions within the next few months.

While this is just one small step to address the increasing problem of casualisation in Australia, it’s still a terrific outcome that demonstrates what unions can achieve by working together.
Two QNMU members gave evidence to the commission and raised issues around short shifts and casual employment. Thanks to Vicky Stewart and Jan Paulsen for your time – your views were clearly heard by the Commission.

We’ll be in touch with more information once the new provisions come into force.
