Different countries, same challenges

In mid-September 2013 the QNMU became a foundation member of Global Nurses United – an international alliance of nursing and midwifery unions working together to keep nursing and midwifery strong; and to protect patients, communities and the planet.

This collective includes nursing unions from a countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Ireland, Israel, the Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, and the United States.

We know nurses and midwives around the world are facing similar challenges – austerity measures, privatisation, unsafe workloads, attacks on affordable health care and on the profession itself – so it makes sense for nursing organisations globally to share their experiences, strengths and ideas.

To celebrate the launch of the new organisation, GNU held an inaugural Day of Action around the globe on 17 September, 2013, at which time the QNMU planted a commemorative tree at our Victoria Street office, to symbolise the old adage that "from little things, big things grow".
