How to create a successful Branch motion!

Branch motions are a cornerstone of the QNMU's democratic process. Popular ideas that gain traction at the branch level can be put forward as official motions to the QNMU's supreme decision-making forum - QNMU Annual Conference. Submitting a motion at Conference is one of the most powerful ways you and your fellow QNMU members can have a say in our union’s priorities and day to day work.

But what makes an effective motion, and what are some things your branch can do to ensure your motion has the best chance of success at Conference?

This workshop has been developed to assist Local Branches in bringing local issues to the QNMU Annual Conference via the motions process.

During this session we will discuss the following items;

  • the key responsibilities of a delegate
  • what is a motion and how does the process work
  • how to write an effective motion
  • how to submit a motion using the online tool
  • the importance of a collective voice in the development of a branch motion
  • discussion regarding what type of motions are within union policy
This 2-hour session will also be an opportunity to hear from QNMU Secretary Beth Mohle and/or QNMU Assistant Secretary Kate Veach about the current priorities of your union, to ask questions and provide your feedback as part of our bi-annual Meeting of Delegates (also open to all members).

If you are unable to attend the in-person session in your local area, you can join us online at our Zoom event on 11 April.
