The Sunshine Coast Community Mental Health Branch has distinguished itself as a model of inclusive, connected, and effective union representation across a challenging and geographically dispersed network of four sites and twelve teams.
Through inclusive monthly meetings supported by accessible Microsoft Teams participation, a consistent workplace presence, and a genuine commitment to psychologically safe conversations, the branch has created an environment where members feel confident to raise concerns and trust that those concerns will be collectively supported and acted upon.
This culture of openness has been instrumental in the branch’s proactive and sustained response to significant concerns around workplace treatment and psychological safety – an effort that was maintained with purpose and unity until meaningful, lasting improvements were achieved.
The branch’s influence has also grown beyond its own membership, with delegates presenting at MODS, co-hosting a virtual conference for Sunshine Coast University Branch, participating in QNMU education sessions, and contributing to the formation of a new Mental Health LCF for the Sunshine Coast.
In equal measure serious and spirited, the branch has also become known for its creativity – from its regular appearances in InScope magazine to the now-legendary pet wall initiative during Protected Industrial Action, where members dressed their pets in pink to amplify solidarity across the network.
“We’ve shown that members are strongest when they stand together. No matter the challenge, we’ve faced it collectively – and that’s what has made the difference. Also, we will never apologise for the pet wall. It was an absolute highlight.”
