Kay Hammond has spent more than two decades showing up for the people in her care – first as an intensive care nurse, then as a midwife, and now as a union advocate committed to creating workplaces where colleagues feel genuinely supported.
Kay began her career in 2000 with a Bachelor of Nursing before completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Intensive Care Nursing and spending many years supporting critically ill patients and their families. Kay broadened her practice through a Master’s degree in Midwifery in 2009, which has since become the primary focus of her clinical work.
In recent years, her professional growth has extended into workplace advocacy, taking on roles as a Health and Safety Representative and QNMU Delegate. In these capacities, Kay has provided guidance and support to colleagues through particularly challenging periods, working to ensure that concerns were properly acknowledged, investigated, and addressed – and that the outcome delivered real and lasting change.
Her approach is grounded in respectful communication, effective advocacy, and the conviction that union values and clinical values are not separate pursuits but one and the same.
“I am saddened that such significant workplace challenges required attention, but I am proud of the strength and determination I demonstrated throughout the process. Most importantly, I am proud to have contributed to positive and lasting change for the colleagues and community I care deeply about.”
