Julia Suarez

I was not fortunate to have the upbringing I hoped for, nor the one I would wish my children to have.
Eventually, this affected my health.
Although this was a sad time in my life, it was also a blessing as it led me to meet a nurse who changed my life forever.
I don’t remember her name, I wish I did.
On admission, she took me outside in my wheelchair for some air. She shared with me her compassion and empathy.
The nurse said to me there was always a light at the end of the tunnel and that some people really cared about the suffering of others and wanted to help.
Reflecting on her words and actions, I realised how right she was because I feel this way for others every day.
I decided in that moment that I wanted to be a nurse, not just for my patients but also for my colleagues.
I wanted to always see the positives and the hope within others and the situations we all face together.
The most rewarding thing is when I see the smiles and giggles from the children I care for, after all they have had to go through, I feel I make a difference.
And when my families thank me for the care my colleagues and I have provided, this warms my heart and makes me feel humbled to be there in their time of need.
