Maree Hill

It all started when I went out to a remote Indigenous community within the Northern Territory, Australia in the summer of 2006.

I was involved in a volunteer program to assist in the community's schools, but once they were aware I had previously completed a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Public Health, I was able to also volunteer within the health clinic.

I assisted with iron testing and the allied health teams that visited the community as well as working within the schools assisting the teachers.

I was within the prep class, and this was a fantastic experience. The children taught me so much about their culture and accepted me within their community.

After school we would run a green shed which was a safe place for the children to go.

I really enjoyed the experience and wanted to give back further so when I returned from the Northern Territory, I applied to start my Bachelor of Nursing.

I have since completed further studies and work within a Registered Training Organisation teaching the next generation of nurses.
