Ethical Decision Making for Nurses and Midwives

Ethical Decision Making for Nurses and Midwives

Ethical behaviour and decision-making are core elements of nursing and midwifery practice.

They shape who you are as a professional, influence the care you provide, and create the foundation for safe and positive practice environments.

Ethical dilemmas arise often – whether you’re in a clinical or non-clinical role – and the choices you make can impact patients, colleagues, and your own future practice.

This course will help you develop practical skills and access resources to navigate ethical challenges confidently, whether in collaboration with others or in the moment.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • apply the International Council of Nurses and International Confederation of Midwives codes of ethics in everyday decision-making
  • recognise and respond to ethical dilemmas in clinical and non-clinical settings
  • make sound decisions that safeguard patients, colleagues, and professional practice
  • use available resources and frameworks to support ethical decision-making
  • build confidence in making ethical choices both collaboratively and under pressure.

This course is open to all QNMU members and provides 6 CPD hours.
