QNMU solutions to address the nursing and midwifery workforce crisis

Queensland’s nursing and midwifery workforce is in crisis.

Despite our high standards of practice, there simply aren’t enough nurses and midwives in the right roles and with the right training to meet the current and growing demands of our health and aged care systems.

Only coordinated and targeted planning, and genuine investment in the nursing and midwifery workforce, can address the gaps in safe staffing levels and stop the dilution of nursing and midwifery.

The QNMU’s Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Policy Recommendations 2023-2028 sets out our solutions.

The recommendations address three priority areas where immediate action is needed, along with recommended action over the medium and long term.

We have also developed specific workforce policy recommendations for Midwifery and Nurse Practitioners.
