Fees are based on your classification and an average of the actual hours you work, working out to around 1% of your income (on a tax deductible basis). Please ensure you are paying the correct membership fee.
IMPORTANT: Paying an incorrect fee can affect your industrial and professional coverage. Please ensure you are paying the correct membership fee.

A QNMU  “free student member”  means a member who:

  • is undertaking an accredited undergraduate nursing and/or midwifery course through university or Technical and Further Education (TAFE) that upon completion will result in registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency;
  • is not engaged in nursing/midwifery work; and
  • has no nursing and/or midwifery qualifications (diploma or higher).

Please note that you will be covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance

Once the QNMU has received your signed consent and payment of your dues. Your coverage is determined by your application - that is, if you join as a part-timer, but are working in excess of 48 hours per fortnight you may not be covered. You also need to ensure that if your circumstances change that you advise the union as soon as possible to ensure that your insurance coverage is maintained.

* Independent privately practising midwives are not covered by QNMU Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Important notes on inactive membership:

  • Inactive membership does not apply to paid parental leave (including leave at reduced pay).

  • If you are taking leave at half-pay, please contact the QNMU Membership team as you may be able to reduce your membership fees to part time rates.

  • When you resume paid nursing or midwifery work you will need to contact the QNMU to upgrade your membership to match your working hours to ensure your QNMU PII cover is increased to cover your work role.Members on WorkCover or income protection may be eligible to reduce their membership to part-time rates, depending on the number of hours they are paid.

  • Inactive membership is for non-practising nurses and midwives on unpaid leave only.
