COVID-19 vaccine mandates remain in place for health workers

As we head into our usual winter flu season, it’s critical that we do not become complacent and that we continue to follow the health advice when it comes to COVID-19.

Recently, the Queensland Government eased some COVID-19 vaccine mandate requirements, including for venues such as pubs, clubs and restaurants. However, the vaccine mandate is still in place for all health facilities, including hospitals, nursing homes, correctional facilities and disability care.

Queensland Health has informed the QNMU that there are no plans to lift this mandate, which is consistent with other jurisdictions across Australia.

As we know vaccines play a major role in keeping us and those in our care safe. As nurses and midwives, we are at increased risk of infection due to the nature of our work, so it is appropriate that we continue to protect ourselves through vaccination and minimise the risk of transmission to our patients, residents and fellow colleagues.

Queensland Health has also informed us they have no current plans to mandate the third COVID-19 dose (this mandate only applies in aged care). However, if you haven’t yet had your third dose, we encourage you to organise this as soon as possible, as we know the booster provides extra protection against COVID-19.
