QNMU analysis of the Queensland 2023-24 State Budget

Published: 16 June 2023

As the peak professional and industrial body for nurses and midwives in Queensland, we have considered the state budget and pulled out key items that relate to our professions.

Our Analysis of the Queensland Budget 2023-24 welcomes the 9.6% increase in health investment, but expresses disappointment with the lack of measures to address nursing and midwifery workloads (including ratios).

More needs to be done to fix Queensland’s existing workforce crisis before the state government can ensure safe staff numbers and skill mix are in place for new facilities outlined in the budget.

In March, the QNMU provided the Queensland Government a submission outlining key issues for consideration in advance of the 2023-24 Queensland Budget.

Our budget priorities focused on healthcare, social and economic priorities, including:

  • Workforce crisis
  • Healthcare system reform
  • Ratios
  • Role of nursing and midwifery in healthcare
  • Physical, psychological and cultural safety
  • Gender pay equity
  • Housing.

  • The QNMU will continue to lobby for ratios throughout the state and work closely with the Queensland Government to address the health workforce crisis.
