What is your membership type?

Full-time RN / RM / EN / AIN

Members working in excess of 24 hours per week (or 48 hours per fortnight) are full-time fee members. This applies to registered nurses / midwives, enrolled nurses and AINs, carers and PCWs.

Part time workers

Part-time fee members work up to and including 24 hours per week / 48 hours per fortnight. This applies to registered nurses / midwives, enrolled nurses and AINs, carers and PCWs.

Casual workers

Your membership type is dependent on your title and the hours you work per week.

Student Nurse or Midwife with no paid nursing work

Membership is available to students who are studying nursing or midwifery at either university or TAFE with no paid nursing or midwifery work and no nursing or midwifery qualifications (diploma or higher). Student members receive a free membership which includes access to QNMU CPD, QNMU Events, advice and support, discounted personal legal advice, exclusive discounts and study and career resources.

Student Nurse or Midwife working up to 16 hours per week as an AIN or PCW
Membership is available to full-time students who are studying nursing or midwifery at either university or TAFE and are working up to 16 hours per week as an AIN or PCW. Student members receive access to QNMU CPD, QNMU Events, advice and support, discounted personal legal advice, exclusive discounts and study and career resources. Student members undertaking a clinical placement are also covered by the QNMU’s professional indemnity insurance policy and are entitled to industrial protection and legal coverage for their work as an AIN or PCW.

Note: Student fees are for full-time students only who are either not engaged in nursing or midwifery work or are working up to 16 hours per week as an AIN or PCW. If you are working as an EN or midwife or for more than 16 hours per week as an AIN, PCW or carer while studying, you need to take out the appropriate membership. This will guarantee both industrial protection and legal coverage at work.

Nurses and Midwives covered industrially by another union

Membership is available to nurses and midwives who are covered industrially by other unions. For example, a nurse working as an academic at a university would be covered industrially by the National Tertiary Education Union, but may wish to retain membership of the QNMU for professional reasons and for keeping up to date with the latest developments in nursing. This form of membership attracts a discounted fee and proof of membership of the appropriate industrial union is required.

Inactive membership (for nurses and midwives on extended unpaid leave)

  • Whether you're taking an extended break, exploring other interests, between roles, on unpaid parental leave, or retired, maintaining inactive membership with the QNMU allows you to stay informed about current nursing and midwifery issues while continuing to enjoy a range of membership benefits.
If you want to maintain your Ahpra registration, inactive membership with the QNMU enables you to meet the NMBA’s professional indemnity insurance (PII) requirements. You will also be covered by PII if you perform a Good Samaritan Act while not working, or if you undertake voluntary nursing work.* Inactive membership means you continue to:
be covered by the QNMU’s PII policy*
have access to the QNMU CPD portal, QNMU LegalBenefit, our comprehensive discounted legal service
receive your copy of the QNMU’s magazine - InScope
access to a range of union member benefits that can offset the cost of your membership to almost nothing.
    receive return-to-work advice.
*Subject to the terms and conditions of the policy being met and any applicable exclusions.

    *Important note*
  •  Inactive membership is for non-practising nurses and midwives on unpaid leave only.
  • Inactive membership does not apply to paid parental leave (including leave at reduced pay).
  • If you are taking leave at half-pay, please contact the QNMU Membership team as you may be able to reduce your membership fees to part time rates.
  • When you resume paid nursing or midwifery work you will need to contact the QNMU to upgrade your membership to match your working hours to ensure your QNMU PII cover is increased to cover your work role.
  • Members on WorkCover or income protection may be eligible to reduce their membership to part-time rates, depending on the number of hours they are paid.

Financial vs Unfinancial Members

Members must remain financial in order to access QNMU services and support. As per our QNMU Rules “A member owing any monies to the QNMU for a period of 60 days after those monies become due is unfinancial and is not entitled to exercise any of the privileges of membership."

Please notify the QNMU if you change your phone number, email address, home address or workplace. Update your details by clicking on the "My profile” and edit details. We recommend using your personal email address, not workplace or student email address.

Working across multiple states or border districts

If you are working in more than one state or territory, it is advised to take out membership with the ANMF Branch in the state or territory where you are employed for the majority of the time (primary state).

Members who will be engaging in contracts in another state for more than 12 weeks should transfer your membership to the state you are working in.
QNMU members who intend to work in another state must notify the QNMU in writing by sending an email to our Membership Team at [email protected] or contact Member Connect

Members should note:

  • Voting rights are retained in the primary state only
  • Industrial or professional services or advice provided by the secondary state would be done in consultation with the primary state or branch where relevant.
  • Should any extraordinary costs occur (e.g. legal expenses), these would be shared between the relevant branches or as otherwise arranged between them.
  • Members requiring assistance should, in the first instance, contact the ANMF branch in the State or Territory where the issue or problem arises.

Nurses and midwives covered by other unions
Membership is available to nurses and midwives who are covered industrially by other unions. For example, a nurse working as an academic at a university would be covered industrially by the National Tertiary Education Union, but may wish to retain membership of the QNMU for professional reasons and for keeping up to date with the latest developments in nursing. Change of circumstances:

Changing your hours:

Part-time fees, applying to members working up to and including 24 hours a week. Full-time fees apply to members working more than 24 hours a week.

Student membership fees must be changed when a student commences work in nursing or midwifery (including AIN work, Personal Care Worker or Care Assistant).

If you’ve changed your position (such as moving from an Assistant in Nursing to an Enrolled Nurse or an Enrolled Nurse to a Registered Nurse) your membership fees may also change.

If you are unsure what fees you should be paying, contact the QNMU membership section. Payment of the incorrect fee may affect your professional indemnity insurance coverage.

Relocating to another state

The QNMU is a state branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) along with every other state in Australia.

Don’t take risks with your union membership – transfer to the appropriate nursing union state branch for total union cover. If you are a financial member of the QNMU or any other state branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation.

Transfer your membership simply by call our Membership Team on 07 3840 1440.

Resigning

Contact QNMU first to ensure that you don’t jeopardise your professional indemnity coverage or any claim you may have against your employer.

If you are resigning from the QNMU please note that it is a requirement that all resignations are in writing and that you are liable for all fees due in accordance with the relevant legislation. Your membership does not lapse because fees are not paid.
