What is your membership type?
Full-time RN/ RM/ EN/ AIN
Members (also referred to as ordinary or paid membership) working in excess of 24 hours per week (or 48 hours per fortnight) are full members. This applies to registered nurses/ midwives, enrolled nurses and anyone undertaking nursing work (including AINs carers and PCW).
Part time workers
Part-time fee members work up to and including 24 hours per week/ 48 hours per fortnight. This applies to registered nurses/ midwives, enrolled nurses and assistants in nursing (however titled).
Your membership type is dependent on your title and the hours you work per week.
Membership is available to students who are studying nursing at either university or TAFE. Student members receive a significantly discounted rate and receive our quarterly member magazine, InScope, as well as enjoy access to our comprehensive library services.
Student members undertaking a clinical placement are also covered by the QNMU’s professional indemnity insurance policy.
Note: Student fee is for full-time students only who are not engaged in nursing or midwifery work. If you are working as an AIN, Personal Care Worker, Care Assistant, EN or midwife while studying you need to take out full or part-time membership. This will guarantee both industrial protection and legal coverage at work. .
Nurses and Midwives covered industrially by another union
Membership is available to nurses and midwives who are covered industrially by other unions. For example, a nurse working as an academic at a university would be covered industrially by the National Tertiary Education Union, but may wish to retain membership of the QNMU for professional reasons and for keeping up to date with the latest developments in nursing. This form of membership attracts a discounted fee and proof of membership of the appropriate industrial union is required.
Inactive members (Parental leave, Retired, taking a break from nursing)
‘Inactive’ members pay substantially reduced membership fees.
An inactive membership allows you to maintain your QNMU membership, keep on top of your CPD (a requirement of AHPRA registration), keep up-to-date with nursing and midwifery issues and most importantly, and obtain advice when you decide to return to the workforce. You will still have access to QNMU's LegalPlus for discounted non-work related legal services and Union Shopper for discount buying.
Note: Upgrade your membership if you return to nursing or midwifery so you’re covered under the professional indemnity insurance policy.

Financial vs Unfinancial Members
Members must remain financial in order to access QNMU services and support. As per our QNMU Rules “A member owing any monies to the QNMU for a period of 60 days after those monies become due is unfinancial and is not entitled to exercise any of the privileges of membership."
